Narrative:
On Saturday, August 22nd, 2026, I was working my assigned 4PM to 12AM shift in the East-3 cruiser. At approximately 8:25PM, Officer Thomas Lambert (East-1), and I were dispatched to Market Basket (400 Somerville Avenue), for a report of a shoplifter that made threats. The following is a summary of the incident:
The original dispatch was for a male that shoplifted and then threatened to go back and shoot everyone. The suspect was described as a black, male, bald, wearing gray jeans and a black belt, carrying two bags. Dispatch then updated units that the suspect walked towards Union Square.
I located the suspect at Carlton Street and Somerville Avenue, wearing jeans and carrying two bags. He identified himself as Mr. Derrick Lane. He stated that he did not take anything from Market Basket, he just went in there to use the bathroom and the workers approached him so he "told them off."
Sergeant Timothy Van Nostrand (Sierra-8) and Officer Guylerna Pierre (East-4) also responded.
I spoke with the Assistant Manager at Market Basket, Mr. XXXX. He stated that Mr. Lane took a cart of unpaid merchandise into the back room, where the bathroom was and then urinated and defecated all over the bathroom floor. He then took his cart full of unpaid merchandise to the front of the store, passed all points of sale, without making any effort to pay for the items and exited the store with the cart of unpaid merchandise.
When he was in the parking lot, Mr. XXXX went to the front of Mr. Lane's cart and asked for his receipt. Mr. Lane stated that he had lost the receipt. Mr. XXXX then asked him if he paid in cash or card because he could check for the receipt using his card. Mr. Lane replied that he had paid in cash. Mr. XXXX then asked what register and Mr. Lane said "one of the larger registers." Mr. XXXX informed him that the larger registers were all closed so that was not possible. He then informed him that he would be taking the cart of unpaid merchandise back into the store and calling the police. As Mr. XXXX took the cart and pushed it away, Mr. Lane yelled out to him that he was going to come back one night and shoot him as well as other workers and then pointed to other workers and said he was going to "finish off everyone" in the store.
Mr. XXXX stated that Mr. Lane had a "full cart" of chicken, meats, produce, chips, and Clorox. He did not have an itemized list of the items but stated that it was at least $130.00 worth of merchandise.
When asked about video footage, he stated that the managers that can access the cameras would be in tomorrow and he will ask them to retrieve the video.
I then asked Mr. Lane a second time about the items that he shoplifted and he said that he thought he had paid for them.
I placed Mr. Derrick Lane under arrest for the following:
- 1 count of 266/30A/A: Shoplifting by Asportation
- 1 count of 275/2: Threat to Commit a Crime
Mr. Lane's arms were extremely stiff and could not go to the center of his back; because of this, I used two sets of handcuffs when placing him under arrest. He was transported to the station by Officer Brian Clancy, operating the Prisoner Transport Wagon (Unit 200). He was booked by Lieutenant Samir Messaoudi.
