Narrative:
This report is a summary of incident 26052701:
On 7/31/2026, I, Officer McCune, was assigned to marked unit West-6 working for the Somerville Police Department. Around 11:45 AM, while patrolling the area of Davis Square, I observed a party that I knew to have 5 active warrants for his arrest. I then radioed to dispatch asking them to conduct a CJIS query of Christian Mercedes (XXXX). Dispatch did confirm that those warrants were active.
At this point, with Officer P. Barton (West-7), we began to approach Mr. Mercedes in the area of the Holland St. crosswalk close to the MBTA station. As I began walking toward Mr. Mercedes, he began to walk away and questioned why I was approaching him. I told him the reason for my interaction with him was that he had five warrants for his arrest. While this conversation was ongoing, Mr. Mercedes began to backpedal away from me to the point where he was almost entering the crosswalk on Holland St. In an attempt to place him in custody, I tried to grab him, and that is when Mr. Mercedes fell backward, tripping over a cylindrical object by the crosswalk. After this brief event, I was able to grab hold of him, and that is when Officer Barton and I got into a brief struggle with Mr. Mercedes. Mr. Mercedes was then taken to the ground, and officers were able to secure him in handcuffs. I would like to note that while on the ground, officers were issuing verbal commands for him to relax and stop fighting with us. Throughout the struggle, Mr. Mercedes was doing a combination of tensing his body and flailing his arms at different points, which made it difficult to place him under arrest safely. The struggle ended in an alley between two stores. Once Mr. Mercedes was in handcuffs, I asked him if he was ok multiple times, and at no point did he say that he wanted or needed any medical attention. While in proximity to Mr. Mercedes, I did smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath in addition to him having glossy eyes.
Unit-200, operated by Officer D. Dottin, was requested to the scene. Once the prisoner transport vehicle arrived, Officers picked up Mr. Mercedes, and that is when I brushed off some dirt that was on his clothes as well as helped him put his shoes back on. Mr. Mercedes was transported back to the Somerville Police Station, where he was booked in the usual manner by the shift commander, Lt. Capasso. During the struggle, I sustained several abrasions to both of my elbows, as well as my right pinky knuckle. An officer injury report will be filled out. I would also like to make note that several video cameras in the area would have captured this incident.
