Narrative: On September 25, 2026 at approximately 9:21 AM, I, Officer Benson, was assigned to patrol in area East 1 with my Field Training Officer, Keighla McAloney.
While responding to a reported shoplifting incident at 4 College Avenue (7-Eleven), Officer Taylor advised me of a suspect in custody at the intersection of Broadway and Josephine related to this incident.
Upon arrival, I observed a male later identified as Mr. Antony Dos Santos, sitting on a bench detained by Officer Taylor. Mr. Dos Santos was wearing handcuffs. I observed a pack of cigarettes, a lighter, and other miscellaneous items to Mr. Dos Santos right. Officer Taylor then requested station officers to our location to transport Mr. Dos Santos for booking. I asked Mr. Dos Santos what had happened, but he did not respond, instead beginning to laugh. When I asked Mr. Dos Santos for his date of birth, Mr. Dos Santos stated "XXXX" but Ofc. Taylor advised me that this information was incorrect. When I asked Mr. Dos Santos again, he stated "XXXX", which has been substantiated by internal forms.
At this time, I indicated to responding Somerville Police Officers that Mr. Dos Santos was being placed under arrest for shoplifting.
At approximately 9:57 AM, I conducted a follow-up response to 4 College Avenue. I spoke with the manager and reporting party, Mr. XXXX. Mr. XXXX explained that at approximately 9:14 AM, Mr. Dos Santos had come into the store and asked for a pack of cigarettes and lighter from the counter clerk. When handed the merchandise, Mr. Dos Santos departed the store without paying, carrying the merchandise in-hand. Mr. XXXX asked Mr. Dos Santos to pay as he began walking toward the door, but he continued to exit without responding to staff.
Antony Dos Santos was arrested for the charge of MGL c266 s30a Shoplifting by Asportation, and booked in the usual manner by Sergeant Campers.
