While working a First Half shift on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at approximately 11:15 PM, I responded to a reported motor vehicle accident near 582 Broadway. Officers Mark Canty (W6) and Jonathan Thermidor (W7) were already on scene, along with Somerville Fire Department Ladder 3.
A short time earlier, Officers Canty and Thermidor had responded to a separate incident at 754 Broadway involving Ladder 3 (occupied by Lt. Daniel Costa, Jack Fitzgerald, and Tommaso Saporito). In that incident, a white Lexus had struck the fire truck and fled the scene. The collision was reported by the firefighters aboard Ladder 3.
Upon arrival at 582 Broadway, I observed a white Lexus (MA registration XXXX) off the roadway at the intersection of Cedar Street and Broadway. The vehicle had mounted the sidewalk and collided with a fire hydrant. Both crash locations are public ways in the City of Somerville. The firefighter confirmed that the vehicle was the same one involved in the earlier accident.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as Alexa Diranian. Officers had already made contact with her. Officer Canty advised that due to fluids leaking from the vehicle, he requested Ms. Diranian exit the vehicle multiple times for her safety. She refused, repeatedly asking to speak with her father. She eventually placed a call to her father and, unable to explain the situation, put him on speakerphone. Officer Canty briefly explained that she had been in an accident. Ms. Diranian exhibited several signs of alcohol impairment, including the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage on her breath, bloodshot and glassy eyes, and slurred speech. When asked to step out of the vehicle, she continued to refuse and became increasingly uncooperative.
Due to safety concerns and her non-compliance, Officers Canty and I physically removed Ms. Diranian from the vehicle. She was unsteady on her feet and belligerent. She refused to perform field sobriety tests and ignored all verbal commands. While attempting to place her in handcuffs, she resisted by twisting her body and pulling away from officers. Officer Canty secured her left arm, while I secured her right. Due to her continued resistance, we had to bring her to the ground in order to safely apply handcuffs.
While retrieving her personal belongings from the vehicle, I observed one open vodka nip bottle in the drivers door compartment. Inside her purse, I located an additional five vodka nips (one opened, four sealed).
A witness on scene, Mr. XXXX, reported that he knew Ms. Diranian from his workplace a nearby liquor store where she is a regular customer. He stated that he observed her nodding off in her vehicle and attempted to intervene by knocking on her window and asking for the keys, offering to call her an Uber. Ms. Diranian refused and subsequently drove off. Mr. XXXX also reported seeing a passenger in the vehicle, whom he believes fled the scene after the crash.
Ms. Diranian was evaluated by Cataldo EMS and refused medical attention. She was placed under arrest for Operating Under the Influence (Alcohol) and Resisting Arrest. Unit 200 transported her to the Somerville Police Department for booking, which was completed by Lt. Vivolo. Ms. Diranian refused the breathalyzer test, declined to sign both the suicide screening and booking sheets, and subsequently tore and crumpled them. She was issued a citation (T3486592) for 90/24A OUI Liquor. The vehicle was towed by Stephens Towing, due to heavy damage.
Respectfully submitted,
Edna DaCosta 346
Somerville Police Department.
